Hamming (7,4) Code Checker/Decoder
How This Converter Works
Checks and corrects a one-bit error in a 7-bit Hamming (7,4) word using even parity at code positions 1, 2, and 4. For a zero syndrome it literally displays the label ON Error.
Formula or rule
Compute checks over positions 1,3,5,7; 2,3,6,7; and 4,5,6,7. The checker maps the resulting syndrome to a one-based bit position; its display-name table labels an error at code position 4 as P3, although position 4 is the third parity bit in the encoded layout.
Example
- Input
- 0010111
- Calculation
- All three even-parity checks are satisfied (syndrome 000); the data positions 3, 5, 6, 7 contain 1011.
- Result
- ON Error <br> Data - 1011
